Sulfur Dioxide

What Is Sulfur Dioxide?
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a gaseous oxide produced by the burning of fuels containing sulfur.

Where Does It Come From?
-- Coal and oil, steel mills, refineries, metal smelting, and pulp and paper mills emit sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere.

How Can Sulfur Dioxide Affect Health and the Environment?
-- Sulfur dioxide can reduce visibility and contribute to the formation of acid rain. Acid rain can cause lung damage. It also increases the acidity of surface waters such as lakes and streams, harming the organisms living there.

-- Primarily affecting the respiratory system, children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular disease need to be especially careful of sulfur dioxide emissions.
